The City of John Day Public Works Department completes day to day operations which include maintenance and repair of the water distribution system, wastewater collection system, street system, motor pool and parks. The department currently consists of 7 employees.

The department works to solve local utility issues that may arise during and after development by working with other local utility providers. The department also works with emergency personnel and Oregon Department of Transportation to maintain public safety during natural disasters and weather hazards.

The water distribution system includes three deep wells and a natural spring. The three wells are located on the north side of the John Day River while Long Gulch Spring is located on the south side of the John Day River along the east side of Highway 395 between John Day and Canyon City.

The wastewater collection system includes the City’s current wastewater treatment plant, which was built in 1949 and updated in 1978. The city of John Day is currently updating the wastewater facilities plan and completing the preliminary engineering and feasibility studies for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant. The new treatment plant is slated for construction to begin in 2019.

Summer is a popular time for home improvement and construction projects. The department would like to remind you to call 811 or visit http://digsafelyoregon.com/ prior to digging on your property.
