Business License Information

The City of John Day requires all businesses operating within city limits to obtain a business license. Licensing fees help offset the staff time needed to assist businesses with compliance matters, prevent fraudulent activities, and track the community’s economic health by monitoring changes in the number of active businesses and their employees.

Business licenses must be renewed annually.

1. Basic Fee: Under Ordinance 25-05, the basic fee for any business license is $50.00. Each distinct activity within a building, or each separate activity conducted by a business, requires its own license.
2. Transfer Fee: When a business changes ownership, the new owner must pay a $15.00 transfer fee to update the existing license
